Chapter II Modern Medical Complex
Administration

Sister Marie could be justly proud of the modern new West Wing, and, with its completion, she relinquished her office as Administrator in 1979. Sister St. Joan Willert, who followed Sister Marie, is now serving as Chief Executive Officer, a new title and a new job which allows Sister to direct her attention to the wider aspects of hospital administration. Assisting Sister in her administrative work is Mr. Thomas Plantz, Administrator, who is the first lay person to hold the office of Hospital Administrator at St. Mary's. He is also Executive Vice President, responsible for the day-to-day administration of the hospital. He reports to the President of the corporation and works together with a management staff of assistant administrators who individually direct the activities of various hospital departments which include:

Patient Care Services, directing all nursing related services and assuring quality care;

Support Services, including such departments as food services, housekeeping, patient rehabilitation services, respiratory therapy, risk management, and medical records; social services and the Purchasing department;

Ancillary Services, administering all laboratory departments;

Physical Resources, maintaining plant operations, property management, space utilization and any facility development by overseeing architectural design, new construction or remodeling projects;

Human Resources, managing services relating to the entire hospital personnel, such as wage scale, recruitment, training, growth and development, health, communications and benefits, and publishing various magazines and brochures that communicate with donors and friends, medical staff and employees;

Fiscal Services, accounting for the financial and data processing affairs of St. Mary's, including arrangements for admitting and discharging patients;

Planning and Program Development, delving into rules and regulations that govern hospital operations, conducting surveys and assuring proper accreditation and licensing standards, as well as creating Possible avenues of long range development;

Development/Community Relations, covering a liaison posture with the local community and St. Mary's service area, directing all fund-raising programs, developing volunteers who work with the professionals in St. Mary's and acting as guardian of the past by preserving the archives, artifacts and memorabilia of historical nature;

Public Relations, answering the need to promote, publicize and communicate to the general public the story of St. Marys hospital personnel.
