African American History Internship Project Reports

The African American History Internship Project began in the spring of 1987. Recognizing that African Americans were significantly underrepresented in their collections and displays, the Arizona Historical Society worked with Pima Community College and interested African Americans in Tucson, Arizona, in a joint project to correct this discrepancy.

Initially, four interns worked with the Arizona Historical Society's collection, contributing to a display that was shown in several locations around Tucson. From there the project has grown, with student interns from Pima Community College and the University of Arizona trained to interview local African American's and collect photographic histories. Each year's project has revolved around a central theme, represented by the following exhibits:
