The Smith and Cannon Homes, 1904

Livestock
Before 1910 Looking north to Speedway to the newly built Dr. Cannon and George
E. P. Smith homes. These homes were built in 1904 and supplied with water from
Louise's well until 1909. The two-story Smith Home at 1195 East Speedway and
Cannon home (later and for many years the home of Dr. and Mrs. A. E. Douglass) are
still standing (1990) and owned by George, Jr. who is donating them to the University
for their historic importance. I remember the Cannon/Douglass home when it was
Hester Hunter's Bookstore. (On a field trip from University Heights Elementary School
1938, I bought the newly-published book, Mary Poppins.) In May 1990, a deep hole was
dug behind these homes for the construction of a new building for the College of
Business and Public Administration. TKM

Colt and New fence
Colt and new fence. The Cannon/ Douglass and Smith homes are in the background.
There are two arms on the utility pole, proving this photograph was made later than the
first picture on this page. TKM
Louise feeding colt
Louise feeding colt. There are many pictures of the new colt and the black
labrador. There are not many pictures of Louise, she was a person who did not like to
have her picture taken. There is also a good series of Louise and a labrador puppy. TKM
Chico hitched
Back in harness. The mare is a working mother and the colt would like to have
some attention. Note the windmill, two water tanks and the platform for the third tank. In
the account books, water was sold by the gallon, or the price was for a full tank. See
more pictures of Chico and the colt. TKM
