San dra Lucia, "St. Lucy," painted by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686), in Florence in the early 1600s. Notice that her eyes are prominent in this painting. The story is told that Lucia's family arranged a marriage for her. Her suitor said that her eyes were the loveliest part of her. She so vigorously opposed the arranged marriage that she plucked out her eyes and gave them to her suitor, saying, in effect, if you like them so much, they are yours, but I will not marry you. Legend has it that her eyes were miraculously restored. The painting was restored in 2003. [source: tour notes]
