Comments

This is one of two, tall, hand-carved, baroque-style candlesticks. At the time that they were created, woodcarvings were typically covered with a white plaster called gesso to provide a smooth surface for the paint that covered it. Gold leaf was applied over the paint. [source: tour notes]
