St. Anthony of Padua was a close friend and favorite disciple of St. Francis of Assisi. Notice the habit and knotted cord of a Franciscan friar, decorated with gold designs. St. Anthony has a book, probably of Scripture or meditations, to show that he was a teacher. He is the patron saint of unmarried girls and housewives, and is the finder of lost objects (such as car keys). This statue is carved wood with a layer of gesso. [source: tour notes]
