"THE VALUE OF OPPORTUNITIES"

I have heard and read countless facts about President Abraham Lincoln. I have not known of any discourses in which opportunity came knocking at his door. On the contrary, he just like any one else had to go out that door and enter the world of competitiveness and cooperation searching for opportunities.
It is very common to hear people say, "I have not had any opportunities," or, "I was born at the wrong time and place." These people will rationalize and continue their careless attitude. It is necessary to act and accomplish if one desires to find opportunities. But one must constantly keep searching if one wants to find opportunities.
With the purpose of "creating" opportunities, Benjamin Franklin designed a plan by writing his ideas and then putting them into action. It is obvious some of the ideas are more complex. If your ideas and plans are important to you, do not skip any of the steps in your plan of action. We should always be evaluating our plan of action.The best thing is to develop a strategy just as if you were planning a military attack. If the plan does not prove practical, then one should retreat, reorganize and recharge with a revised plan.
It is not advisable to be searching for opportunities without having an appropriate plan and preparation. Let me ask you, have you acquired sufficient instruction and education? Have you considered taking a correspondence course or an evening class? Have you tried to learn new skills lately? If you have not done so, go ahead and do it. Additional skills will strengthen and expand your horizons and opportunities. During these times of computerized technology, it is an undeniable fact that all those who have been replaced by machines will have to find new positions in unknown fields. Technological advances will not decrease. On the contrary, they will increase, allowing people more leisure time than ever before in history. The rational person will use this leisure time in a correct manner by becoming active, doing less talking and more taking action. Of course, this person will have dreams, but their projects will incorporate these dreams into reality. The will and strength to carry out these plans come from within not from outside.
Here is an aphorism written by an old eastern wise man, Omar Ebn Al Halif: "Four things never return: the spoken word, the shot arrow, past time, and wasted opportunities." This other statement was given by Alcaeus who lived 600 B.C. "It is not the finely constructed buildings, nor the stone houses, nor the water channels what constitutes the city but the men who seize the opportunities".
Look back in history and observe the generation of brave men and women who grasped the opportunities. If it would not have been for them, what kind of civilization would we have today? These people who played a vital role in the development of our American society seized the opportunity of their time. William James, who was an early American philosopher and psychologist wrote the following during the 19th century, "It does not matter how complete the collection of high ideals and how good our feelings are if we do not take advantage of a concrete opportunity.In the same manner, our character remains unchallenged. Hell is filled with people with good intentions who did not carry out their plans".
How many opportunities have you let slip by because of the lack of action and involvement? Of course, these opportunities are long gone, but don't despair, there will be other ones. Then, you would be ready to seize them and utilize them. Prepare yourself to take advantage of these opportunities. Develop your capabilities and potential. If your condition is healthy and positive, age is no barrier. We hear these days of more mature people who finally accomplished what they wished for in their long life. I have personally known people who have received their college degrees in the autumn of their lives.Thus, there is no acceptable excuse if your desire is genuine.
You probably will not find these opportunities within the confinement of your home, although, there have been cases where people did find them there. Free your imagination and let curiosity guide it. Haven't you been surprised about useful things you have discovered about yourself? Perhaps all you need to do is to let one of your ingenious ideas out. Then you might have caught the tiger by the tail and will not let him escape.
Only each person can limit his own opportunities. Nobody else can. The very well known life story of the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen is a perfect example of an individual who prepared himself and searched for opportunities. Ever since he was a boy, he showed a keen interest in the exploration of the North Pole. He learned everything scientific related to the North and South Poles and their magnetic properties. Equipped with all this information, he entered the Norwegian Navy and fulfilled his ambition. He became the first man to reach the South Pole, he did not accomplish this task just because of his good luck. His success was mainly due to the acquired scientific knowledge about the poles and his attention to minute details. A great part of his success was due to his perseverance, concentration, positive attitude and his ability to search and seize the opportunity. Consequently, I think you can understand how important it is that we search for opportunities and obtain the maximum benefits from them. I believe there are only a few individuals in history whose ambition was to reach the South Pole. However, if we only invest half of the energy that Amundsen invested in his conquest, we would accomplish our desires and would certainly accomplish something great in our lives. Don't allow yourself to drift on the sea of hopelessness. Position your objectives and sail directly towards them. You will encounter storms but stay afloat and manage the waves. There is always calm after the storm.
If opportunity does not knock at your door, I assure you it could be waiting for you in other places. I guarantee it. As long as you search for opportunities you will find them before you get to the end of your journey, be ready to seize them.

A pesar de que oído y leido infinidad de relatos acerca de Abe Lincoln, no he sabido nunca de álguno que describiera a la oportunidad llamando o a su puerta; no, también él, al igual que todos, tuvo que salir por aquella puerta y entrar al mundo de la competencia y cooperación, en busca de la oportunidad.
Es muy común escuchar en labios de la personas: "simplemente no he tenido la oportunidad" o "no nací en el tiempo o lugar correcto, por eso . . ." Es seguro que esos individuos razonarán sobre todas sus omisiones, pero seguirán siendo descuidados. Es necesario obrar -- accionar, si desea encontrar oportunidades, ya que ella requiere un completo estado de movimiento y debemos impulsarnos, si queremos hallarla.
Benjamín Franklin ideó, a fin de "construir" la oportunidad, el poner siempre el pensamiento en escrito y después formular un plan para ponerle en acción. Claro está que algunas ideas son más complicadas que otras, como también algunas requieren más planeamiento que otras, pero si las suyas significan lo bastante para usted, no deje pasar una sola face de ellas sin examinar. Por otra parte, siempre debemos estar evaluando nuestro plan de acción; lo mejor es desenvolver una estrategia, cual si se estuviera planeando una acción militar. Si el proyecto no prueba ser práctico, entonces estar preparados para retroceder, reagrupar y luego volver a atacar, con un nuevo plan revisado.
No es cuerdo, sin embargo, hablar del ansia de obtener una oportunidad, sin antes procurar estar preparados lo mejor posible y equipado apropiadamente para cogerla en cuanto se le encuentre. Permítame preguntarle, ¿ha obtenido lo más que ha podido en cuanto a instrucción que existe a su entera disposición?; de tener tiempo suficiente, ¿ha considerado seriamente, tomar algún curso por correspondencia o alguna clase nocturna? ¿ha procurado aprender una nueva habilidad últimamente?, sino lo ha pensado, hágalo; un conocimiento añadido le fortificará y expanderá el horizonte -- ampliará el área de las oportunidades. Es un hecho innegable que hoy, en esta era de mecanización, todos aquellos quienes han sido reemplazados en sus trabajos por un cerebro mecánico, tendrán que procurarse nuevas fuentes disponibles en campos desconocidos para ellos. Esta mecanización, ciertamente que no declinará -- por el contrario, aumentará, permitiéndonos, por consiguiente, más tiempo desocupado, aún cuando ya el día de hoy disponemos de una cantidad mayor de la nunca antes gozada en toda la historia. La persona sensata, utilizará ese tiempo de ocio de una manera correcta. Hará planes para actuar -- menos palabrería -- más ejecución. Soñará, claro está, pero sus proyectos estarán encaminados directamente a convertir esos sueños en realidad; y el poder, la fuerza para llevar ésto a cabo, viene de adentro, nunca de afuera.
Aquí tiene un aforismo de un viejo sabio del Este, Omar Ebn Al Halif: "Cuatro cosas no vuelven: la palabra dicha; la flecha lanzada; el tiempo pasado y la oportunidad desperdiciada." Y este otro pensamiento nos fué dejado por Alcaeus, quien existió seiscientos años antes del nacimiento de Cristo: "No son los edificios finamente techados, o las casas de paredes de piedra, bien construídas, ni los canales y arsenales, lo que forman la ciudad sino los hombres aptos para útilizar las oportunidades."
Dé un largo vistazo a la valiente generación que creó nuestra historia. Si ellos, tanto hombres como mujeres, no hubieran buscado y asido las grandes oportunidades ¿que tipo de civilización confrontaríamos hoy? Esas personas quienes jugaron parte vital en el desenvolvimiento de nuestra dinámica sociedad Americana, fueron quines percibieron las oportunidades de su época. William James, nuestro filósofo Americano y tempranero psicólogo, escribió, en las postrimerias del siglo diecinueve: "No importa cuan completa sea la reserva de máximas que se pueda poseer, tampoco importa cuán buenos sean los sentimientos, si no se ha tornado ventaja de cada oportunidad concreta para actuar, el caracter de uno puede permanecer enteramente sin afectarse por lo mejor. Con meras buenas intenciones, es, proverbialmente, con lo que está pavimentado el infierno."
¿Cuántas oportunidades ha dejado escurrirse de sus manos, por falta de acción, de movimiento?. Claro que esas están perdidas para siempre, pero no desmaye, ya habrá otras; ¿está preparado para asirlas y explotarlas? Prepárese a tomar la mayor ventaja de ellas, cuando las encuentre. Aprenda algo nuevo cada día. Desarrolle sus capacidades y talento latentes. Sí su condición es saludable y positiva, la edad no es barrera. A diario leemos de personas de edad avanzada quienes finalmente alcanzaron lo ambicionado por ellos en su larga vida. Yo mismo he conocido a varias de estas personas quienes obtuvieron su título de colegio, precisamente en el otoño de su vida. No hay excusa aceptable si su deseo es genuino.
Probabilidades hay de que no encuentre su oportunidad dentro de los confines de las cuatro paredes de su hogar, sin embargo, existen casos raros de personas quienes ahí la han encontrado. Dé libertad a su imaginación, permítale a la curiosidad que lo guíe. ¿Acaso no se ha sorprendido a veces de las cosas que descubre en usted que son de utilidad y que podían todavía perfeccionarse para servir mejor? Quizá todo lo que necesite sea desatar alguna de sus ingeniosas ideas -- entonces, tal vaz tenga un tigre cogido por la cola y . . . no lo deje escapar.
Unicamente cada quien es quien puede limitar sus propias oportunidades -- nadie más. La tan conocida historia de Roald Amundsen, el explorador Noruego, es un perfecto ejemplo del hombre quien se preparó a sí mismo para la oportunidad que buscó. Desde cuando era un muchacho retuvo un ávido interés en la exploración polar. Dominó todo el conocimiento disponible entonces, tocante a datos científicos relacionados con los Polos y su atracción magnética. Armado con toda esta información, la oportunidad para completar la ambición de su vida le aguardaba cuando ingresó a la Naval Noruega. Sí, él fue el primer hombre en llegar al Polo Sur y no consumó esta hazaña por un golpe de su buena fortuna; su éxito se debió principalmente a la adquisición del conocimiento de la condición polar -- a la atención que él dió hasta a los más mínimos detalles. Fué el resultado de su perseverancia, su concentración, su actitud positiva y la hábilidad de buscar y asir la oportunidad. Así que, ya podrá aquilatar, cuanto debemos poner de nuestra parte para encontrar la deseada oportunidad y obtener lo máximo de ella. Creo que habrá muy pocos para quienes su más grande ambición sea el alcanzar el Polo Sur, sin embargo, si tan solo pusiéramos la mitad de la energía que Amundson puso en la obtención de su conquista, en perseguir nuestros grandes deseos, seguramente que consumaríamos algo grande en nuestras vidas. No se permita naufragar en las rocas de la desesperanza; coloque alto su objetivo y navegue siempre en curso directo. Encontrará tormentas pero domine las olas y manténgase a flote -- siempre hay una calma después de cada tempestad.
Si la oportunidad no llama a su puerta, lo seguro es que le aguarda en muchos lugares, se lo garantizo. Es casi una proposición a medias -- si usted busca las oportunidades, ellas le saldrán al encuentro mucho antes de llegar al fin del camino. Esté preparado para aprisionarlas.
AL VISLUMBRAR UNA OPORTUNIDAD,

¿Se aprovecha de ellos, reconociéndolos como oportunidades para aprender? ¿para mejorar la calidad de su trabajo?
¿ES ESCRUPULOSO EN EL DESEMPEÑO DE SU TRABAJO?
¿Qué instrucción extra está procurándose para hacerlo mejor? ¿Se siente suficientemente preparado para en caso de aproximarse un ascenso?
¿ENCUENTRA FELICIDAD EN SU TRABAJO?
¿Trata de hacerlo agradable tambien, para quienes en él lo rodean?
