"THE EXCITEMENT OF ENTHUSIASM"

Throughout my life, I have seen that countless list of objectives can be reached with enthusiasm. Personally, I can say that with the fire of enthusiasm I accomplished the best tasks of my life.
Enthusiasm is like an inner mental light that shines from within and is not superficial. Etymologically, the word enthusiasm comes from the Greek language and it means: "Possessed by God"" En-within--and Tusias--God. This definition is accurate because if we analyze the characteristics of enthusiastic people, we can identify certain characteristics which only God possesses: a). The one that provides and grants without lessening what they already have. b). The one that shines without reducing its brightness. c). The one that eliminates the evils of pessimism.
Of all the traits which constitute personality as a whole, enthusiasm is the element which pays the highest interest. Enthusiasm is the essential and necessary element to triumph in everything. It is the guiding light. It is the virtue which uplifts man higher and higher. It also makes tasks and projects pleasant since it provides patience during difficult moments and it promotes the need to be creative and to create the means to produce something out of nothing. Therefore, it pays to possess enthusiasm. Don't you believe it?
Enthusiasm is an irrepressible emotion and if you carefully observe your fellow human beings, you will notice that enthusiasm is revealed in one's physical appearance. This attitude reveals the amount of enthusiasm that exists in each individual. You will be surprised to discover among adults who lack enthusiasm that it is shown in their physical posture, facial expressions and actions. Those happy individuals who possess enthusiasm rapidly attract attention and captivate their audience with their powerful magnetism. These enthusiastic people become leaders because they communicate this energy to those around them. On the other hand, nobody is interested in following a stiff or dull person. The person who lacks enthusiasm is unattractive and unpopular.
For five years, I served as an adviser for the Navajo Nation. I felt very comfortable among them and became interested in learning their traditions and customs which unfortunately have become corrupted by the white man. During the time I spent with them between 1955 and 1960, the tribe received millions of dollars in oil contracts. Because of these contracts you would think that they are in a well-off situation, but this is not so. This is due to the lack of enthusiasm and they owe this condition to the great white father.
During the last half of the 19th century, the Navajo Nation was subjugated by the mighty white man and his greedy desires to take control of anything valuable on the Navajo land. During this time, they slowly drained ounce by ounce the humanity out of the Navajo Indians. Specifically, they were taken away. The old Navajos call it, "The march of death," from Northern Arizona to Southern New Mexico. They were taken like a herd of cattle, even worse, because those who transport cattle choose the healthy and stronger cattle, but not with the Navajo Indians. The white man herded all members of the tribe. This journey proved to be difficult and mortal for the elderly and young children who fell along the road, and even some animals get a more decent burial than those poor souls.
Years later an overwhelming sense of remorse made the white man think that he should compensate the Navajos for the cruel and unjust treatment. Consequently, the government provided everything for the Navajos, treated them as if they were unwanted orphans, and the tribe was relocated to their reservation. Once the geographic limits were established, the one thing the white man did not replace was their human dignity.
The American government, just as only it can do, established a central office named The Bureau of Indian Affairs. Through this department they provided what they considered "Justice." They also provided medical care and they listened to their complaints and squabbles. Schools have been built, land has been added to build churches of different denominations to promote the Christian faith. The government lent them money and gave them all kinds of assistance but took away a great part of their cattle to control overgrazing.
After accomplishing all this and appeased his conscience, the great white father carefully sat in his well-cushioned couch feeling as an all almighty God, "On the seventh day let's rest." I repeat, the one thing which was never returned to the Navajo Indians was "That" they most needed - Their sense of identity as humans, the will to fight. Today, observing the tribal government in action and their ceremonies, and social events, immediately we are struck by the sense of cold indifference and impassiveness which is reflected on their faces. Such attitude can be observed from the littlest boy tied to the papoose to the oldest member of the tribe.
This definite expression of apathy reveals the total lack of divine inspiration of enthusiasm. This missing feeling of enthusiasm could be easily replaced among the Navajos but the great white father is cold and is not interested in admitting his faults and correcting them. Undoubtedly, enthusiasm is one of the traits of the American individual, and the American Indian should possess the highest amount since his roots have been grounded in the American soil longer than any other individual who pretends to.
Continuing ahead, I believe I must insist on the fact that one must develop a high degree of self-esteem before you can feel enthusiasm in your body and in your soul. Once we acquire the spirit of enthusiasm, we will feel the force of this admirable feeling. Emerson called it, "The Mother of the all the efforts and without enthusiasm nothing great was ever attained."
Enthusiasm is contagious and marvelous and it should be dispersed. A while back I read this description by A. B. Zu Tavern, "Before water can generate steam it must boil. A locomotive will not move an inch before the steam monitor shows 212 degrees. A man without enthusiasm is like someone who is trying to move the engine of his life with lukewarm water. Remember, enthusiasm is the electricity in the battery, it is the fermenting bubble in wine, it is the healthy vigor in fresh air, it is the heat in the fire, and the act of breathing in each living organism."
When a person fails to impress you, have you thought about the reason why? I bet you nine out of ten, the person did not show self-confidence. How was this person supposed to show any enthusiasm in their merits or talents?
Remember the degree of enthusiasm is reflected in your physical posture, (is your posture firm and erect?) and in your facial expressions (Do you show a gloomy and anxious look?), in your actions ( are these actions positive and assertive? or negative and insecure?) It is hard to be able to see us the way other people see us. But if we really wish to have an exact idea as how we are seen by others, take a look in the mirror, or look at some photographs that were taken without you noticing, ask a friend their objective opinion about you. If we disagree with this objective opinion, do not get annoyed. "The truth" will help us to correct the wrong conceptions we have about ourselves.
No human being should adopt as a best effort a mediocre approach. In order to accomplish your highest potential, perhaps you should have a pep talk with yourself, just like the one the coach has with his players at half-time during a game. Do not wait, acknowledge your talents and merits, and repeat them frequently. Do not hesitate to listen like you did when you were a child and heard the story of the little locomotive that could. Make that your motto which took the little engine to the top of the steep hill. Repeat one and a thousand times, "Yes, I can, yes I can" and after you have conquered your objectives, you too will be able to happily say, "I knew I could."
Convince yourself that enthusiasm is a fundamental part of your life and believe in it. Face each day enthusiastically and at night, you will enjoy the soothing dreams that every mortal desires. Think about success with the utmost possible enthusiasm and at the end, you will see that it was worth doing it that way.
If you think that you can't accomplish something, then you won't be able to.
If you think of yourself as a failure, of course you will be one.
If you wish to win but you think you can't, of course, you won't.
Maintain and nourish in your soul the flame of enthusiasm. Don't allow it to be extinguished.
DO YOU HAVE A BURNING DESIRE? Do you trust yourself that you can fulfill it? What obstacles prevent its accomplishments?
WHAT KIND OF THINGS HAVE MERIT FOR YOU? Are you enthusiastically ready to start the fight to accomplish it?
DO YOU INVOLVE OTHER PEOPLE WITH YOUR ENTHUSIASM? Are you convinced of your own talents and merits, so you can convince others about them? Is your attitude optimistic, enthusiastic, happy and energetic?

A lo largo de mi vida, he visto que infinidad de cosas han sido alcanzadas por medio del entusiasmo. Personalmente puedo decir que la mejor tarea ejecutada en mi vida, fué sostenida y lograda a través de su fuego.
El entusiasmo es una luz mental interior, por lo tanto, su brillo no es superficial sino que emana de dentro. El origen literal de la palabra nos viene del griego y significa "poseído por "Dios" -- en, dentro y tusias, Dios -- es decir "Dios dentro" y no cabe duda que así ha de ser, ya que analizándole podemos descubrir en él ciertas cualidades que sólo son dotes de Dios: provée, sin merma propia; ilumina sin disminuir su irradiación; elimina el mal del pesimismo sin menoscabo alguno de su optimismo.
De las cualidades de la personalidad, es la del entusiasmo la que, sin duda, paga un interés mayor. Es el elemento escencial para triunfar en cada cosa; la luz que guía; es la virtud que levanta más y mas al hombre en su lucha; hace placentera la tarea, proporcionándonos paciencia para la dificultad; produce la urgencia de crear. . . y crear significa adquirir algo de la nada -- así que el poseerle, debe pagar ¿no lo cree usted así?
El entusiasmo es una emoción irreprimible y si observa con detenimiento a sus semejantes, notará que el contenido de este sentimiento en cada uno es exudado en su apariencia física, revelándose de esta manera el monto existente en cada quien. Frecuentemente le sorprenderá descubrir que entre los adultos es más frecuente encontrar a aquellos que carecen de él, mostrándolo en su postura, en su expresión facial, en sus acciones. Sus felices poseedores, rápidamente atraen la atención; sub subyugan como con poderoso magnetismo; se convierten en líderes por la escencia que transmiten a quienes les rodean; a nadie le interesa seguir a un ser momificado o a un "agua fiestas." La persona falta de él es inatrayente e insolicitada.
Por cinco años y medio serví como consejero al pueblo Navajó. Me encariñé bastante con ellos y me interesó el conocer y estudiar sus actitudes y costumbres, las cuales, desafortunadamente, han sido corrompidas por el hombre blanco. Durante el tiempo que estuve entre ellos -- 1955 a 1960 -- la tribu obtuvo millones de dólares en contratos de aciete; usted supondrá por ésto que su situación es magnífica ¿verdad?, no es así, y no lo es debido a su falta de entusiasmo para la adquisición, condición que deben al Gran Padre Blanco.
En la última mitad del siglo diecinueve, el pueblo Navajó fué sojuzgado por el poderoso hombre blanco y sus avaros deseos por apoderarse de todo cuanto le fuera posible de lo que en esa tierra valiera la pena. Fué entonces cuando empezó el lento exprimimiento de cada onza de humanidad existente en los indios. Fueron llevados, en lo que ahora llaman los viejos Navajos la "marcha de la muerte," desde el Norte de Arizona hasta la parte Sur de Nuevo México. Se les condujo como quien traslada una manada de ganado a través del campo, peor aún, ye que cuando alguien transporta ganado, escoge únicamente el de cierta edad, más saludable y de mayor resistencia. No sucedió así con los indios; el hombre blanco condujo absolutamente todo miembro de la tribu y la jornada probó ser de veras dura y mortal para los de edad avanzada y niños pequeños, muchos de los cuales cayeron a lo largo del camino y a muchos animales les ha sido dado un entierro más decente que el que les fué otorgado a aquellos infelices. Años después, un abrumador remordimiento hizo que el Gran Padre Blanco pensara en que debía compensarles por el castigo cruel e injusto de que había hecho víctima al indio y dispuso por tal, que el Estado los tratase amablemente, proveyéndoles cual si fuesen huérfanos indeseados; y aunque la tribu fué reinstalada en su reserva, una vez que los límites fueron definidos, lo que el hombre banco nunca les restauró fué su dignidad humana. El Gobierno Americano, como sólo él puede hacerlo, les instituyó un magnífico cuartel general, al cual se nombró "Departamento de Negocios Indios." Se les dispensa lo que ellos consideran "justicia"; se les proporciona cuidado médico; se les escucha e intenta mediar en sus quejas y disputas; se les han construido escuelas como tambien se ha cedido terreno en arrendamiento a iglesias de toda denominación imaginable, para el desarrollo de su fe Cristiana; se eliminó una gran parte del ganado vacuno (su único medio de vida, evitando así la devastación del pasto; se les prestó dinero. . . y así, un sin fin de ayuda. Después de consumado todo ésto, acallada su conciencia, el Gran Padre Blanco pulidamente se arrellanó de nuevo en su bien acolchonado sillón, sintiéndose cual Altísimo Dios -- "En el séptimo día, permitámos el descanso." Repito, que lo que nunca le ha sido devuelto al indio es Aquello que más necesita: -- su sentido de identidad como humano; el ánimo para la lucha. Hoy, al observar en acción al Gobierno de la Tribu, al atender sus ceremonias y eventos sociales, inmediatamente seremos sacudidos por el gesto de fría indiferencia, de abandono, reflejado en sus rostros, desde el más pequeño chiquitín amarra do a una tabla hasta el del más anciano miembro de la Tribu. Esa clara expresión de apatía no es sino la revelación de la carencia completa de esa inspiración divina que es el entusiasmo. Muy bien pudiera restaurárseles esa emoción por medio de un lento proceso, pero el Gran Padre Blanco es frío y no está interesado en admitir su culpa y enmendarla. Siendo el entusiasmo, definitivamente, una de nuestras auténticas características Americanas, el Indio debería poseerlo en porcentaje mayor, ya que sus raíces van más hondo en este suelo Americano que las de cualquier otro que se vanagloríe de serlo.
Y bien, siguiendo adelante, creo que debo de insistir en que, ante todo, debe desarrollarse un alto grado de confianza propia antes de que pueda sentirse esparcido por el alma y cuerpo, el bendito espíritu del entusiasmo; una vez adquirido lo primero, sentiremos, empujándonos, el ánimo de este admirable sentimiento. Emerson le llamó "la madre del esfuerzo" y dijo: "Sin éste, nada grande fué alcanzado nunca."
El entusiasmo es contagioso -- un maravilloso contagio que merece la pena ser esparcido. Hace tiempo leí esta expresiva descripción escrita por A. B. Zu Tavern: "Antes de que el agua genere vapor debe de hervir. Una locomotora no se moverá una pulgada, hasta que el medidor del vapor marque 212°. El hombre sin entusiasmo está tratando de mover la maquinaria de su vida con agua tibia. Unicamente una cosa puede suceder: que se atascará. Recuerde, el entusiasmo es la 'electricidad' en la batería; es la 'burbuja' en el vino; es el 'vigor' en el aire; es el 'calor' en el fuego; es la 'respiración' de todas las cosas vivas."
Cuando una persona falla en impresionarle ¿ha reflexionado sobre cuál podrá ser el motivo? Apuesto que en nueve de cada diez casos es, que tal persona no se mostraba convencida de ella misma, ¿cómo iba, pues, a estar entusiasmada con sus propios méritos o cualidadaes?
Recuerde que el grado de entusiasmo que contenga está evidente en su postura, (¿es ésta firme y erecta?); -- en su expresión facial: (¿muestra aplomo o zozobra?); -- en sus acciones: (¿son seguras y positivas o por el contrario, inciertas y negativas?). Es realmente difícil el poder vernos tal y cual somos vistos por los demás, pero si en verdad deseamos hacernos una idea exacta de cómo somos vistos, démonos una repentina mirada en el espejo, o examinémos algunas instantáneas que nos hayan sido tomadas desprevenidamente; pidámos a algún amigo su opinión, conclusión de una examinación objetiva suya a nuestra persona; si acaso aquella no es de nuestro agrado, no nos erizemos, "su verdad" nos ayudará a corregir la idea equivocada que tenemos de nosotros mismos.
Un trabajo efectuado con medio ardor es mediocre y ningún ser humano debía estar dispuesto a aceptar la mediocridad como su mayor esfuerzo. Para alcanzar el grado sumo de su poder, quizá necesite tener consigo mismo una "plática reanimadora," al igual que la que el instructor dá a sus jugadores a la mitad del juego; no se detenga, reconozca sus méritos y cualidades propios, repítaselos con frecuencia. No dude en escuchar ahora, como lo hizo de niño, la historia de la pequeña locomotora que ''podía''; haga suyo y practique el lema de esa máquina, mismo que la llevó hasta la cima del escarpado cerro. Repítase una y mil veces "si puedo, si puedo" y después de que haya conquistado su objetivo, tambien usted dirá con júbilo: "sabía que podía."
Convénzase de que el entusiasmo es parte importantísima. . . crea en él. Enfréntese entusiastamente a cada día e irá cada noche a gozar del reparador sueño que todo mortal desea. Piense en el triunfo con el máximo entusiasmo que sea capaz de sentir y verá al final, que valió la pena haberlo hecho así.
Si piensa que no puede -- claro que no podrá.
Si piensa que es un derrotado -- le aseguro que lo será.
Si desea vencer pero cree que no puede -- sencillamente no podrá.
Alimente en su alma el fuego del entusiasmo; nunca permita que esta flama se consuma.
¿TIENE UN ARDIENTE DESEO?
¿Confía en poder lograrlo? ¿cuáles son los obstáculos para su obtención?
SI SABE QUE ES DE MERITO,
¿Le entusiasma el emprender la lucha por alcanzarle?
¿CONTAGIA DE ENTUSIASMO A QUIENES LE RODEAN?
¿Se siente convencido de sus propios méritos, para poder así convencer a los demás acerca de ellos? ¿es su actitud optimista, entusiasta, alegre, jovial?
